Ebtech 2-Channel Line Level Shifter LLS-2
2-Channel Line Level Shifter with 1/4″ Smart Jacks
Feeding the right signal level to the next part of the signal chain isn’t something we think about much. However, it could be the answer to some frustrations you may have felt when plugging some gear into your mixer, power amp, rackmount gear, etc.
If your gear has RCA or TS 1/4″ connections, then it’s most likely a -10dBV connection. If it’s an XLR, TRS 1/4″ then it’s most likely a +4dBu. The best way to know is to look at your gear manual. (I know… the manual is annoying… but it may save you from future headaches…)
A typical application of the Line Level Shifter is plugging keyboards and synth gear into a mixing console. Most times you can probably turn up the gain on the mixer and the keyboard, but you may be introducing unwanted noise especially if you are sending the signal down a long distance. The Ebtech Line Level Shifter (LLS) will balance the signal in addition to eliminating ground antenna which can be the source of buzzes and hums.
You may want a Line Level Shifter when plugging in a Turntable with a built-in phono amp or a tape deck to a mixer. These things don’t even have an output level to boost, and the input gain on the mixer may not be enough to get the level to where you want it.
You may think using a DI would do the same thing. However, DIs are designed to plug into a mic level and typically has a guitar level input. Line level gear could overload it and degrade the sound. But if that is what you are looking for… have at it! Keep this information in mind but don’t let it stop you from being creative!
The Ebtech Line Level Shifter Functionality:
- Increase or decrease signal voltage back and forth between -10dBV and +4dBu (depends on which way you route through it).
- Eliminate the source of ground hum and buzz by breaking loop antenna.
- Convert between balanced and unbalanced connections.
How to Use the Line Level Shifter:
- Simply place a channel of the Line Level Shifter® on the cable connections between the two mismatched pieces of equipment. Does not affect the quality of the audio, it will improve it!
Ebtech uses 1/4″ smart jacks that accept any combination of unbalanced (TS) or balanced (TRS) plugs. These are passive devices (no power required), in cold rolled steel housings, and hand-soldered circuit boards and top quality components and hardware.
